I thought you would be interesred in Russia’s 2008 prediction about the consequences of Ukraine becoming a NATO member.
According to Wikileaks, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov considered Ukraine joining NATO a military threat. Lavrov also said that the NATO move would split Ukraine in two, start a civil war, and force Russia to consider a military intervention.
Aside from Ukraine’s EU membership bid becoming the civil war catalyst, I’d say that Lavrov was pretty dang accurate!
It’s interesting to note that despite Russia’s prediction and warning, the US and EU moved forward with Ukraine’s integration with the West as if a war is worth the price…
