SUMMERS, NO

When you think of the numerous reasons for why Larry Summers should not be the next Federal Reserve Chairman – like his misogynistic views; his proven ability to blow USD 1.8 billion or 27% of Harvard University’s endowment on high-risk investments in 2008; or his financial thought leadership regarding derivatives which contributed to the broader 2008 financial crash that sunk many investor positions and has the world still licking its wounds – consider another big reason against Summers’ appointment that wouldn’t typically enter your mind: he’s socially irresponsible.

Being a socially irresponsible global leader means innocent citizens can die.

I’m reminded of this point when Summers, as Chief Economist at the World Bank, recommended that Western corporations use Africa – well, the least populated areas of the continent – as a toxic waste dumping ground.
