A little horror, a lot of explaining, and DAMOYEE on repeat.

one. halloween
reminds me
y’all need to stop
sendin’ me horror movies
that ain’t
horror movies
when i ask y’all for
supernatural horror”
a film of cousin ray
with a knife ain’t it

two. lincoln center’s
san juan hill festival
shouts out the black
and brown neighborhood
cleared to make room for it
but what do the displaced families
and their descendants get?
compensation?
housin’ help?
a way back home?
can they get more than a
musical?
documentary?
exhibit?
and does lincoln center get
another fundraisin’ lane?
otherwise
let’s line up for the
fort greene festival
bed stuy festival
williamsburg festival
prolly east new york festival
feel me?

three. while we’re on
gentrification
bo’s bagels in
harlem had a huge
blackface bagel sign outside
See the Bo’s sign
yeah the sign came down
the artist said he
wanted to celebrate the
neighborhood and
culture

like i said on threads
i as a
black man would
never draw racist
caricatures
of chinese people and
put them outside my
bakery in chinatown

the owner’s statement
is up
he says
bagels are brown
and the grill is hip-hop

i once questioned
a chop suey font
in a proposed logo
and heard
but i’m not a racist

i shut that
font idea down

we were talkin’
about the design

and in bo’s insta comments
the black woman
who put them on blast
is “the girl
who started this”

they ain’t learned

even so
the response to
a hard-headed store
should be a
closed wallet
not threats

four. i interviewed a
job candidate who used
a.i. for real-time help
answering my questions
yeah i laughed
and now consulting firm
mckinsey is testing
10-minute convos with
a bot
playin’ a client
to see how candidates
handle humans

have your bot
interview my bot …

five. damoyee hit my
threads feed
buildin’ a song
she’s been in
my ears lately
calling her indie pop
only tells part of it

i hear r&b
spirit of jazz improv
builds that feel classical
80s new york club music
dreamy layered loops
and future beats

watch her build it
instrument by instrument
voice by voice
new single
smoke me out
drops november 20 …

song currently stuck in my head: “burnin’ coal” – les mccann
