PUFF JOHNSON, 1972-2013

Hearing about the world losing modern Soul singer Puff Johnson to cercical cancer reminds me of a time during the 90’s where Rap music had no problems breathing if attention was oxygen, and the finishing touches were being placed on taming Alternative Rock for its transition to the mainstream. In contrast the mindshare of Jazz bordered on laughable status, many estsblished Soul artists at the time gave up their home genre in pursuit of Pop dreams or simply stopped recording, Soul revivalists enjoyed niche audiences, while a smaller group of warrior artists rebelled against prejudiced music labels and attempted to stretch the definitions of Modern Soul. Almost all of these smaller groups were sprinkled with rare young artists who relied on pure voice to create. Puff Johnson was a member of that artist cadre. May she Rest in Love…
