The show started streaming on Hulu last night.
Those with eyes have witnessed this real-life story before: people guilty of working while Black in White spaces while the latter thinks it’s trying sooo hard to decriminalize the former’s daily identity that the outcome can be outrageously funny. And simply outrageous. You can replace “Black” with any other person who’s deemed different, and the result doesn’t change much. To make the story too wild to make up, this undeclared workplace war on Blacknuss (sic) happens in one of the most, er, apparently liberal, industries in the Western world: publishing.
The story was begging to be told, and bestselling author Zakiya Dalila Harris’ book, The Other Black Girl, told that story — if my added emphasis just told you something.
And now the book is a Hulu TV series with Harris collabing with actress and filmmaker Rashida Jones (Boston Public; Parks and Recreation) to deliver ten episodes.
True to the book, the series seems to take the premise further and ask, “What if all of this is a straight-up thriller?”
Big thanks to Sheila B. Ellis for the reminder. I plan to start streaming tonight. Check the trailer below …
