Some of you have been waiting for this: a modern Punk band that doesn’t sound like a 90s Pop doppelganger.
Welcome to Jenny Hates Techno.
I really appreciate the pairing of band members John M. Ellison on guitar and “Boo” Dixon on bass. They probably listened to the same bands you and I did growing up, but the duo plays as if they’re using their own minds.
And when your Punk band has a soulful-sounding lead vocalist, why hide them? Danielle Williams feels right at home with the group’s emotion and urgency, and can still walk into a late-night Gospel hootenanny’s open arms.
Consider that drums in any musical style have “voices” like any other instrument — a “tone”, if you use your imagination — and you can tell straightaway that Kelvin Lee stands out from other Punk drummers.
Want a firsthand look? Check out the squad’s August 2 performance at the MLK Memorial Library in Washington, D.C. I provided a link and embedded the video below.
While I’ve been aware of the band for a while, I didn’t know they released an EP, Alien Pond, back in 2020. But like you, I’m sure plenty of things happened in 2020 that missed my radar. I plan to give the release a listen soon.
If you’re into bands that root themselves in Punk while having fun with other genre and rhythmic explorations, Jenny Hates Techno could be your current pleasure. I’ll keep watching them and share updates …
